Picasso Exhibit Seattle Art Museum

I finally experienced the Pablo Picasso exhibit this week at the Seattle Art Museum. More than 150 original works of art, including 75 paintings and sculptures, complimented by prints, drawings and personal photographs. I walked away with three thoughts:

1. JUST DO IT

Picasso was impulsive, when he had an idea, an urge – he created. His expansive work showcases how often the best ideas in life are spontaneous. Don’t be afraid to experiment. When you have an idea act on it, don’t let the fear of failure paralyze you.

2. PASSION CREATES PERFECTION

Picasso certainly had that Spanish machismo, lover boy thing going on. He was clearly passionate about women and they often served as artistic inspirations. My personal favorite is this piece he created of his lover Dora Maar.

Pablo Picasso: Dora Maar

That icy sparkle in her eyes, the sharp and almost dagger like nails, her erect posture – I can feel both his love for her and fear of her. Picasso was also very passionate about what was happening in society and he created compelling pieces about war and poverty. Think about your life for a moment. What are you most passionate about? Are you passionately creating or creating for a paycheck?

3. THE BEST IS YET TO COME…

The work Picasso created as a young man is certainly different from the work we know him best for – most of which was created well into his 40′s and beyond.

We often get so caught up on being young – I had this idea (before I turned 30) that everything was going to go downhill after a certain age. Picasso is an example of why this notion is so wrong – he kept a youthful outlook on life continually learning, reflecting and perfecting.

He died at 92 years old – still creating.
