On the surface “Baby Got Back“ may seem like nothing more than a catchy song about the virtues of the derriere, but this #1 hit song single-handedly ushered in a new era of acceptance. Ladies with a little more “ba dunk a dunk” got more play, and not just in the literal sense - they really got more play; the virtues of their assets sealed within American culture.
NewNaturalista sits down with Seattle rap icon Sir Mix-A-Lot to talk about the significance of “Baby Got Back” – and oh yes – hair weaves.
Sir Mix-A-Lot recently released his latest single Carz , an ode to his love of hot, fast, expensive automobiles. When he’s not making his own music (or driving fast cars) Mix is producing for others. Check out more on what he’s up to here.

Great story and insight into the making of your song and video. I guess you impacted how women are seen in videos. Especially how black men feel about black women s body and hair. Thanks Sir-Mix-A-Lot. Funny

This was a terrific story that presented an exploration into this iconic song and video that I don’t believe has ever been presented elsewhere. Kudos on a great piece of edutainment. Very well done.

I loved this, such a great interview! I would have never thought of capturing an interview about the meaning behind the song.
