I’m that girl. The one who will use any free moment in the day to read. It’s my therapy! For me, nights & weekends (after the family goes to bed) is for getting lost in a good book.
Below are three books I’m currently obsessed with:
This book by the late Manning Marable recreates the image of Malcolm X without taking away from his brilliance. I was captivated by Marable’s view of Malcolm’s life – the book brings clarity in ways The Autobiography has not.
PROS: Lots of detail and historical perspective.
CONS: Sadly Marable passed away shortly before the book was released. I would have loved to hear him defend his work. There is also a lot of conjecture which casts a cloud over what appears to be a very well researched book.
Under The Banner of Heaven: A Story of Violent Faith
Jon Krakauer’s book takes us inside the religious beliefs of the isolated world of Mormon Fundamentalists. In this world polygamy is still practiced. Under the direction of God two brothers kill a woman and her baby girl. Krakauer constructs a bone chilling narrative of savage violence, polygamy and unyielding faith. It’s a controversial book that’s will leave you captivated – and sleep deprived!
Ain’t Misbehavin: Tactics for Tantrums, Meltdowns, Bedtime Blues and other Perfectly Normal Kid Behavior
I so needed this book. I was sold the moment I flipped through it. Don’t get me wrong, my 4 year old daughter is an angel – on most days. But every once in a while she slips from her heavenly ways and turns into a little demon. Alyson Schafer’s pocket book offers simple solutions to get your child in line while teaching them life skills and discipline.

right now I am staying up nights reading Mira Grant’s Feed: A Newsflesh Trilogy…very good zombie read. Just finished Wench by Dolen Perkins-Valdez, historical fiction about slaveholders that bring enslaved mistresses to a resort…this one left me wanting more!
Thanks for the suggestions!

Also a good read when you get a chance is The Whisper of Serpents by A. Lawrence Haskins, an author based in the Northwest. Thanks for the suggestions, I’m definitely going to forward this to my friends and family.
