Ever imagine what women will wear in 2040?
Fall trends are shaping up to be more targeted versions of spring and summer trends.
One trend that is clearly at the forefront is what I like to call “Minimalist Futuristic Chic.” The designers who showcased this look are not surprising – Balenciaga for example, helmed by the inimitable Nicolas Ghesquière, does a version of this look every season.
Little changes here and there impart a different focus to the individual collections but the main aesthetic is “fashion forward” in a literal, space-age sense. Ghesquière never fails to push ahead of the sartorial pack and take fashionable sensibilities along for the ride. I think it will be something like the collection for fall 2010, domesticity and “future fashion” enmeshed.

From left to right: Use/Unused tone dress $184, Avenzino & Florence “Exposure dress $119, By Francine curved tucks dress $95, “T” by Alexander Wang $125, Aqua contrast cups mini dress $75, Asos Premium linen twist skirt dress $50, Factory overlap dress $165
This “boldly going where no woman has gone before” look can be a little daunting to apply to everyday life. But when stripped to its basic components, minimalist separates in super hi-tech fabrics, futuristic treatments and voluminous dimensions – it’s not that hard to incorporate. Especially when this trend can be built with some of the other trends of fall 2010 –color-blocking, graphics and playing with texture, paired with other world-ly wedges and clean separates. Many designers have pieces that are right on target and can update your wardrobe seamlessly.
