A little over a year ago British magazine fashionista Naomi Chappell came up with the idea of merging some of her favorite things – fashion, style and green living into a one stop shop company called MyGreenLipstick. Today her website is the go to place for finding green fashion designs that are organic, fair trade, recycled, vintage and vegan.
NewNaturalista: What was the impetus that started MyGreenLipstick?
MyGreenLipStick: With all the concerns in the news pertaining to our environment I began to look at ethical fashion myself and I thought it would be a great idea to bring together an ethical fashion collection, from numerous designers, in one place so that it would become more readily available for women around the world who may not yet have considered it. We have adopted the quote, “The entire ocean is affected by a pebble” by Blaise Pascal. This quote as it says all that we hope for. Women rarely change their entire wardrobe in one go but by gradually adding to it – ethically – they are affecting the great ocean that is climate change and beginning to think differently, one step at a time.
NewNaturalista: What are some surprises if any you’ve learned along the way since starting this site?
MyGreenLipstick: We are always learning but one of the most valuable lessons has been that to use real models is much more effective than mannequins!
NewNaturalista: Why is “wearing” green important to you?
MyGreenLipstick: Wearing green will definitely make me look good but I feel good too as no-one suffers for my desire to look the best I can. I can choose to wear vegan shoes so animals don’t suffer. I can choose vintage and upcycled pieces to reduce landfill. I can choose fair trade pieces to ensure that a fair wage is paid to the people in the supply chain for my wardrobe. I can choose organic and natural fabrics and I can buy British to support our own designers and reduce my carbon footprint. Everyone is a winner when I wear green!
MyGreenLipstick recently launched its own upcycling label which takes vintage garments and redesigning them, adding vintage lace and fabrics along the way. mygreenlipstick.com
