This year I vowed to “green up” my kitchen and bathroom, replacing my plasticware, dishwashing liquid, plastic sandwich bags etc. with “greener” products. It’s a big task but so far the transition is going smoothly. Here are some of the winner’s and the lone loser!
THE WINNERS
The new eco-friendly Ziploc evolve sandwich and storage bags are made from a new resin that uses 25% less plastic than regular bags. The package says they are manufactured using about 50% renewable wind energy and packaged in a 100% recycled box, with at least 35% postconsumer content. I think these bags are a step in the right direction. They’re incredibly thin, which can appear problematic at first, but they are surprisingly durable…translation: you can use them over again.
Sandwich ($2.49), Quart ($3.49) and Gallon ($3.49) sizes. Sold at most grocery stores
Bright Green is a product line made by Safeway. We particularly like the cleaning products; specifically the Auto Diswasher Gel. It’s touted as an environmentally friendly
automatic dishwashing alternative. It’s biodegradable, made from naturally derived ingredients, with packaging made from 55% post-consumer waste.
$3.50 for 75 oz Sold at Safeway stores
Sistemaplastics KLIP IT are cool little storage containers made in New Zealand. They are BPA free which is a big plus for me. I love the locking clip design, it keeps the food inside air tight. I use them just about everyday for my daughter’s lunch – they keep her blueberries, strawberries and apple slices fresh.
$8.99 for a pack of 3 3×7 containers
NEVER AGAIN!
Stonewall Kitchen Lavender Mint Window & Countertop Cleanser. This was a TOTAL impulse buy. I love lavender and the packaging and promises on the bottle got me. It says “This multi-purpose, all natural spray gives you and “open wide” shine and leaves an energizing hit of lavender and mint.” Sounds great! The price alarmed me ($9.95 for 16 fl. oz) but I thought maybe, I could do more with less, evening out the price. I was wrong! I went through a bottle fairly quickly, the lavender smell was just ok and I don’t think it did a wonderful job in cleaning our countertops.
So there it goes – 3 months into the new year and mostly hits! What are some of your favorite green products? Please share.

Its the way to go. I will look for the sponges and bags and containers. A little at a time and change of mind frame to change our environment, thanks.
