A large part of the obesity epidemic in our society comes down to one word – convenience.

It’s easy to get sucked into buying those sugar and fat filled, preservative laden foods. They’re accessible, simple to “cook,” cheap and abundant. It’s convenient to sit a child in front of a tv while you try to get other stuff done.  But here’s the thing – we as American’s have bought into this false sense that it’s too expensive and time consuming to eat right and exercise. This cultural brainwashing of convenience over health has really done a doozy on us. That’s why I’m so happy to see our First Lady taking on the mission to get our kids moving and healthier.

Stay tuned as our family takes on the “Let’s Move” challenge. I grew up as an overweight child and weight was always talked about in my family. I think about my childhood a lot as we raise our daughter. I don’t want her to be fat, but I also don’t want her to have this concept of fat vs. skinny. I want her to love healthy foods (which she does already) love to run, ride her bike and play games. I want her to have a good self image and an openness to trying new and exciting whole foods.

I look forward to reading more about the First Lady’s challenge. We all can do better and it starts with us, the adults!
