Cute Alert: “Babies” Movie Review

My hubby and daughter took me to see Babies on Mother’s Day. They obviously were not the only ones with that idea – the theatre was filled with mommies and daddies…and babies!

I’ve been talking and blogging about this movie for months now – the trailer (see below) was so well done, I just knew the movie wouldn’t disappoint. For the most part, it didn’t. Babies is exactly as it promised it would be, a movie about the daily lives of babies.  I was most captivated by Bayar from Mongolia. His mom works on a farm of some sort – it appeared that she might herd sheep as well. Bayar and his older brother spend their days inside of their hut not far from their mom out on the farm. BUT as you would expect these boys wander – crawling among the cows and other livestock! It was amazing! We also get to see Bayar take his first steps. Precious.

Of all of the families, Hattie from San Francisco was the most predictable and..a little boring! We Americans (compared to the other mothers) seem to shelter and coddle our little ones. I totally saw myself in this story.  I think if you’re into kids and you have some time, go see this movie. I’m sure it would also be a great rental. The movie now playing nationwide.

Ok, I admit it. I’ve watched the trailer for Babies about 6 times already. I even showed it to my own 3 year old, twice. This dialogue free documentary follows the first year of four infants from Namibia, Tokyo, San Francisco and Mongolia. The snippet below is certain to soften even the most hardened heart – and if it doesn’t well, you’re just not human!

Be prepared for a culture shock. For the less worldly viewer, I’d bet their reaction is less “awww” and more “…*gasp* no way!”.

So cute, babies are the same, no matter what culture.

I’m looking forward to the movie also. I saw an advertisement on the morning show recently, about a month after your piece. Yes, everything is LOVE, especially babies.
