For me, there is nothing more exciting than witnessing changes in fashion. Trends come and go but style remains. After distilling seasonal trends we are left with classic looks, tweaked to show the organic change that occurs each season.
2009 was a great year in fashion. We saw the beginning of the end of neon pop colors and throwbacks from the eighties. Most likely due to the current economic climate in the country with a few exceptions more somber palettes appeared on the runways. While the colors grew more subdued, the styles most certainly did not. A holdover trend from last year is the menswear influenced look.
Sexy pantsuits, oxford shirts, brogue shoes and blazers still show a strong presence despite their ubiquity in 2009. Spring 2010 collections bring with it what I call the “statement pant.” With a few additions to the menswear foundation Spring 2010 is becoming the season of the pant. Less emphasis on the masculine and more on the feminine is how the “statement pant” trend is asserting itself. Designers like Givenchy, newcomer Prabal Gurung and Proenza Schouler contributed feminine menswear inspired looks on their runways.
The DNA of this trend still lies in masculinity, but the harem-like draping, paper bag waists and the tapered legs show its “legs” so to speak. This trend may be around for a few seasons so it’s safe to collect a few less exaggerated pieces.
Wondering how to translate the look to everyday? It’s easy when you know where to buy. For most, affordability is key, so mid level ranges such as Asos and Topshop are the best bets when adapting to this trend.
