I don’t know about you but when fashion can at once be comfortable and …I don’t know…fashionable…I am super happy. That’s why I am ecstatic with this burgeoning sport focused trend that has been cropping up on runways for the past few seasons. Now, we aren’t talking about “sporty spice” circa 1996, this time around the trend incarnation is a little more understated…a little less “organized sports” and more digging in the back of the closet …looking for your comfy, worn in sweatshirts! Less team jerseys and more cotton jersey.
Let me tell you, I am all over this trend. Love the inspiration, love the interpretation and most certainly love the ease of the looks. The sporty trend gained legs when Alexander Wang gave us feminized, crop sweat shirts and rolled up sweat shorts for his Pre-Fall 2009 collection.
The momentum grew at the Marc Jacobs Fall 2009 show where he displayed cashmere blend sweatshirts and sweatshirt dresses in the most unexpected and ladylike ways.
The trend soldiers on with the Spring 2010 collection where Alexander Wang delved deeper and presented looks with more of a 1920’s varsity football feel. Although his inspiration is clearly team sports, it is a lot less literal; and while these looks also play around with another trend – strong shoulders – they are still heavily grounded in comfort.
