Leather has been prevalent in fashion for ages. The popularity of the leather “bomber jacket” created in the 40’s and 50’s hasn’t simmered down one bit. As a matter of fact, the leather jacket worn by the “Fonz” from the TV series “Happy Days” now lies in the Smithsonian! While the leather you know has a place in history, what the future holds are trends involving designers using leather in new and unexpected ways. On the spring 2010 runways, designers at Balenciaga, Balmain and Lanvin did breathtaking work with leather. Nicholas Ghesquière did looks at Balenciaga that evoked schoolgirl toughness; tight, ribbed utility pants and pleated Catholic School skirts were standout looks.
Alber Elbaz at Lanvin created looks using leather that appear airy, light and groundbreaking considering the manner with which he draped his dresses.
At Balmain, deconstruction took the forefront. Dresses were constructed with leather that looked aged, artfully destroyed and even corroded. The effect, coupled with the restraint Christophe Decarnin displayed with the rest of the details on the garment was mesmerizing.
These looks herald a new age for leather, an exploration of new ways to manipulate and construct garments going mainstream. This trend should catch fire with the spring 2010 collections and will have major success in the seasons to come. Here is how to invest now:
