While many trends boast a pedigree that originates in previous decades and returns cyclically over the years, not many can challenge the longevity of lace! Lace, used as a decorative accent and also as a fabric for construction has been in existence for centuries. When orchestrated correctly; astounding craftwork and delicate beauty are its trademarks. Lace can be used to evoke many time periods and when used in design, can instantly take you on a mental trip to a specific moment in time.

Who can forget Madonna’s iconic lace in the 80’s? Historical aspects aside, lace also has an unrivaled diversity. It can evoke sexiness in one design and demureness in another.

As a fabric equally used to make grandmother’s doilies as well as lingerie, it is no wonder that it’s time has come around once again! One of the prevalent spring 2010 trends; embrace your feminine side and flash a little RACY or demure lace!

Major designers showcased the dichotomy that is lace on their spring runways. Equal in measure lady-like and sexy; Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana fashioned sublime suits and dresses with the fabric. The stark contrasts of black and white underscored the dynamic at play; overt sexiness versus modern modesty.

The pieces shown on the D&G runway achieved the goal of highlighting ingenuity without appearing inadvertently retro. Dolce and Gabbana also toe the line of playfulness, suggesting the childlike, innocent side of lace and referencing it in a subtly sensuous way. Their appliquéd denim pieces show that levity can also be very fashion forward.

Alberta Ferretti, known for her ethereal and feminine aesthetic also fashioned beautiful, classic looks from lace, further adding to the variety for spring 2010:
