We’re several digits away from fall weather, but I just can’t shake that not-so quiet anticipation that’s been building inside of me…

Lady Like!

From upper left: Antoine Melani “Betse” skirt $59.40 (Dillards), Middle: Louis Vuitton fall 2010 RTW, Soda fountain dress in grape $44.99 www.modcloth.com, Tastemaker dress $124.99 www.modcloth.com, Lauren Jeans Co. “Cannon” skirt $99.50 (Dillards)

The anticipation is for fall fashion of course – for one of the most exciting trends popping up on the radar. A throwback if you will, to the shapes of the late ‘40’s and 50’s. Fuller skirts, boxier silhouettes, a nod to the “new look”…what I like to call the “Hitchcockian Lady.” This is a trend that has mass appeal. The ladylike trend is ubiquitous and was seen heavily on the fall 2010 runways, most notably of course Louis Vuitton, helmed by Marc Jacobs.

Gorgeous silhouettes, sumptuous fabrics, mark my word this trend is going to be HUGE! The ubiquity of its components will be easily to incorporate into your wardrobe, a refreshing point of view for those that are sartorially inclined. Designers far and wide have embraced the more demure, ladylike garments and showed them for their fall collections.

Dolce & Gabbana showed a collection that was a little sexier than the approach that other designers took – but that is par for the course for D&G.

Bibhu Mohapatra’s third collection was inspired by film…more specifically Bernardo Bertolucci’s II Conformista and Fritz Lang’s Metropolis. While a relatively young designer, he clearly has his finger on the pulse of what is fashionable.

Many designers such as Fendi, Cacharel and others were similarly inspired to show fifties reminiscent garb on their runways.

The beauty of the ladylike trend is the modernization of a pre-existing theme. The skirts are full, but when coupled with the bustier (see Louis Vuitton above) we have a look that toes the line between overtly sexual and demurely feminine. It’s the dichotomy that draws the wearer in. It touches that part of a women that is sexy, but still restrained.
