In last week’s installment of Sartorial Science we spotlighted accessories; more specifically accessories of the footwear variety. This week we take a look at the handbag trends that have emerged for the spring season. Handbags have always been an important way of expressing a fashionable point of view. This season there is so much to choose from and in such a variety its mind boggling!! There are mini pouches, lady like satchels, school satchels, messenger bags, hobos, the list goes on and one. Within that framework what has been stressed are the details! Embellishments range from studs, to grommets, laser cut leather…you name it! There is a handbag combination that will ignite the creative expression in everyone. Here, I highlight a few of the styles that are sure to carry you into the next season with a “spring” in your step.

Across the Body/Messenger styles

Across the body handbags have been experiencing a resurgence lately with quite a few handbag designers adding them to their repertoire. Alexander Wang (of the now cult  Coco bag…) has a lovely across the body style called the “Diego” that is sure to keep you looking stylish while also multi-tasking. It’s hard to grab your metro card when your hands are occupied with your purse! The details on the “Diego” are amazing from the thick leather to the silver grommets on the bottom and side of the bag….it’s no wonder this bag is sold out everywhere! Alexander Wang has another hit on his hands!

Here is one stylish treat that has actually been around for a few seasons and was delivered by the boys at Proenza Schouler. This bag represents a few trends; the cross-body bag trend, the school boy satchel look and that bright pop of color that you are sure to see more of as spring comes along…it’s definitely on MY must have list! :

Other designers and brands have also stepped into the arena with their messenger style submissions:

If the messenger style is not for you, maybe you’d go for the ladylike satchel. Its refinement, simple and understated lines can usually polish off any outfit. A few of my favorites are from Balenciaga, Mulberry and Dolce & Gabbana. Note that the bright hues of these statement pieces are right on trend!
