Sartorial Science: Celebrating Mother Earth
By: The Buyologist
Sartorial Science
In recognition of Earth Day, this weeks Sartorial Science focuses on the designers and fashions that celebrate Mother Earth! These green designers do what they can to protect the environment and while we have a long way to go it is designers such as these that will help us get there.
Stella McCartney
Stella McCartney, the daughter of Beatle Sir Paul McCartney is one of the most famous, earth-centric designers around. Stella was appointed head designer for the house of Chloe in 1997 and resigned to start her eponymous line as a joint venture with Gucci in 2001. McCartney shuns the use of fur or leather in her designs, using more earth friendly alternatives such as organic cotton and recycled nylon. Being an animal rights activist and strictly vegan accessories designer cultivates a broader perspective for Stella’s designs and she is a shining example that chic looks can be created while still remaining environmentally sensitive and earth friendly.
Loomstate
Loomstate is an organic fashion line created by Scott Mackinlay Hahn and Rogan Gregory (designer of fashion line Rogan). Loomstate originated as a very hip and forward denim line designed with 100% organic materials and has grown since its inception in 2004 to a full scale line of organic clothing. Loomstate has had high profile collaborations with Barney’s and Van’s amongst others and still manages to keep its earth-friendly aesthetic.
Matt & Nat
I first became aware of Matt & Nat’s amazing designs through…..of course…shopping! Matt & Nat’s is a vegan/eco friendly handbag line that began as a result of co-founder and creative director Inder Bedi’s University project in 1995. For Earth Day they are focusing on a plastic water bottle initiative called “21 bottles”; the initiative focuses on all of the linings in their bags that are now made from plastic water bottles. A cool little addition to the lining is a detail displaying the amount of bottles needed for that particular lining. I have seen this line up in person and it is absolutely amazing how well these accessories are designed and how clearly they can hold their own against any of the other accessories brands out there.
Tom’s Vegan Shoes
Not only are Tom’s shoes earth-friendly, but they are humanity friendly too! With each pair of Tom’s shoes purchased one pair is given to a child in need; it’s their founding premise called “One for One. An American traveler Blake Mycoskie went to Argentina and saw that the local children had no shoes to wear. With that tragedy in mind and wanting to help, he created Tom’s shoes where each pair sold would result in a new pair that would be given away. This is a shining example of companies making a difference. The work done by Tom’s shoes embodies what Earth Day is about; not just helping to save the Earth but making it a better place for its inhabitants.
