Inspired by VAMPIRES

If Orphelia Dracula – Count Dracula’s wife – hosted a cocktail party in Transylvania, Nigeria what would her girlfriends wear to the soiree? The colors: Purples and Reds inspired by the colors of a dangerously dark night; Blues that signify the safety that daylight represents for Transylvania’s Civilians. I also found inspiration from flowers – the flowers I imagined that Orphelia would decorate her estate with the night of the party. Red and Purple Floral Motifs, Baby Blue Leopard Print, Lace and floral inspired details prevail in this collection. VAMPIRES represent Death, Rebirth, and Transformation.

The death of my best friend’s 11 year old daughter Kenise followed by the deaths of two women with photos in my inspiration book – Casey Johnson and Brittany Murphy – took the collection to a deeper place for me. I realized that the reason VAMPIRES resonate so highly with our collective conscience is because VAMPIRES symbolize the idea of Eternal Life. A Vampire Never Dies. Anyone who has lost a loved one can feel that while their loved one’s body is gone, their energy lives on. The reds and purples of the collection now represent the blood that stops circulating when someone passes away, and the traumatic experience of death. The baby blues now represent the Peace and Serenity of Heaven. Flowers make us think of the cyclical nature of birth, death and rebirth. Flowers are also present at one’s right of passage to the afterlife- their funeral.

All the dresses in this collection are named after VAMPIRES or females that have “crossed over” through the doorway of death and will now live an eternal life.

Morbid you say? Yes,True. However, it is much like the Girl that cherishes a dried flower as a keepsake. A truth lies in the beauty of this metaphor. For the dried flower serves as a reminder and a keepsake for what once was. And a reassurance of what, inevitably, will be once again.
